Baby mix-up at Vani Vilas Hospital
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE AUG. 3. It was a new lease of life for one mother and an unpleasant
shock for another at Vani Vilas Hospital here when two babies, one of them dead, were found exchanged at the intensive care
unit on Sunday morning.
Parveen Taj, who gave birth to a 700-gm. boy, reportedly learnt about her child's death only when the boy's
body was brought back to the hospital by Sabeera Begum, who was given the dead child in the place of her daughter. Both the
babies were kept in the ICU when Ms. Taj's son reportedly died on Saturday night.
The mix-up came to light only when on reaching home, Ms. Begum and her husband, Syed Moinuddin, realised
that the dead child had been given to them. Rushing back to the hospital, they found that their daughter was still in the
ICU. The dead child was handed over to an aghast Ms. Taj, and her husband, Abdul Razak.
Bhaskar Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, said: "It was a simple case of mistaken identity which
has been sorted out. We have not booked any case."
However, Mahadev, Sub Inspector at Victoria Hospital Police Station, said that case sheets were misplaced
in the ICU. Things were sorted out after they were found, he added.
